Growing up in Texas, rites of passage were typically baptisms, quinceañeras, and so on. Not so in Australia. This was the swing I was initiated into the daily routine of vegimite* and milo* at smoko*.
vegimite: dark brown food paste made from yeast extract
milo: powdered chocolate and malt drink
smoko: australian slang for break at work, smoking involved or not
These are aquired tastes & so getting there took work. A bite here, a sip there... until I was spreading the stuff on an entire slice of toast, cup of hot milo on the side.
Mike is slowly working his way there too. Although he mixes his vegimite with good ol' peanut butter. Judging from the expressions of the local Australians, as they watch him in horror, I'm guessing this is not acceptable.
