another aussie update

We're back in Olympia now, and we've been greeted with some bad news. Australia has decided to request police clearance and an FBI background check before granting our visas. It's a process that could take anywhere from 1 month to 4 months. We're worried that the delay could cause the mining company to lose interest in us. Our migration agent says these extensive checks seems to be an entirely new practice for Australia. They're getting so many immigrants that they've decided to be more stringent about who they let in. Mike has a misdemeanor on his record that we think may have caught their attention. A couple of years ago he was driving home with a friend who had a bag of weed on him. When the friend turned it over to the police, they were both arrested and charged equally even though Mike doesn't smoke. So in a couple of hours, I'll be on my way to the Olympia Police Department to be finger printed. All of this seems ironic for a country that was first colonized by prisoners.

On the bright side, maybe this will mean another trip to Mexico...

Here we are, on a sunnier day at the beach in San Francisco, Nayarit. 04/23/07
